Online Game Design - Let viral marketing spread your message

An online game is excellent both as a promotional tool and to entice visitors back to your website time and time again. There have been many successful, and highly addictive flash games, and they are still one of the best ways to get your message accross.

While people continue to use email, they will continue to forward entertaining content to their friends or work contacts. This is how something can very quickly spread to thousands of people within hours, and is how viral marketing gets its name.

Keep track of the online game spreading

The Game can feature a scoreboard where visitors can enter their names, again increasing the likelihood they will return and to build the website 'community'. You can ask for an email address before they enter their score to build up your mailing list. Statistics such as number of plays can be counted and displayed, and they can be forwarded on as an e-card, so if somebody plays, they can invite as many friends to play and try and beat their score. Some of these kinds of games can spread very rapidly as each new player invites more new players and so the viral aspect of the campaign begins to happen.

An ideal way to launch a product or service

They are ideal as a seasonal or themed project, perhaps as a way to thank longstanding customers on a company anniversary or Christmas. Or to launch a new product or service. Either way, games can make your customers feel part of a community.

An example of where it worked

With So..? we had the idea of making it a competition. Players have the chance to win a set of VIP tickets to a So..? Event if they are the highest scoring player at a designated time of the week. This makes visitors remember to come back and play at certain times, where this surge of traffic can be used to full advantage by showing adverts or promotions along with the game. This 'serious' aspect of the game also reinforces the fact that they need to enter a valid email address to be entered on the score board, so your targeted mailing list will quickly build.

But what should the game be about?

You may be thinking "what kind of online game could possibly be related to our industry", well you'd be surprised at the great game ideas that can come from the smallest of niche markets. You might even have some ideas of your own to put forward, either way, let Deft Creative design and develop something that is still seen as a unique and exciting marketing concept.

The process

  1. Get in touch to discuss possible themes and gameplay ideas. We welcome any ideas of your own and can work to a range of budgets.
  2. We will send you a rough Flash animated mockup to give an idea of the way the game would look and play, along with a quote.
  3. From this visual aid we can continue to work on ideas until we are both happy with the proposed game.
  4. With your go-ahead, we will build the game, including any graphics
  5. Once tested thoroughly, we will release your game into the wild, and you will be given login information to track its progress.
